Gars am Kamp

Lower Austria. Market town on the left bank of the Kamp south of Horn. Tourist center.

 Sights:

  • Parsonage (1595)
  • Former Redemptorist cloister (17th century)
  • Renaissance houses at the main place

Haangasse 27

Franz von Suppé lived in this house during three summer stays (from 1876 to 1878). In 1878, he composed here parts of his „Boccaccio". Marble tablet

Kremserstraße 40, Suppé's former country house, „Sophienheim"

Over the portal there is an inscription with the first notes of the lied „O, du mein Österreich". Today, the house is in private ownership and closed to the public.

„In this house lived and died the composer Franz von Suppé, born on April 18th 1820 (sic!) - deceased on May 21st 1895. His most known works are: Die schöne Galathee, Flotte Bursche, Leichte Cavallerie, Fatinitza, Boccaccio, Donna Juanita, Die Afrikareise, Das Pensionat, Zehn Mädchen und kein Mann, Banditenstreiche, Frau Meisterin and many other compositions. Raised on June 6th 1924 by his fans"
