#3^ in minor en b3^ in major are not always part of extended diatonicism:
  • As a raised or lowered 3^ is part of a consonant triad we can label it as part of extended diatonicism (=mixture) ; for example, in I# 3 in a minor key, or in bVI ("VI of minor") in a major key.
  • As a raised or lowered 3^ is part of a - preferably dissonant - secondary degree (secondary dominant or secondary subdominant) we better speak of chromaticism: for example # 3^ in a minor key in (V7) -> IV or b3^ in a major key in (VII7) -> bII
